Our Aims and Ambitions

We are a small mixed farm driven by conservation, protecting the natural environment and creating a sustainable farming enterprise.
We are low input and slow output producers of beef, sheep and other crops.
Our ambition is to build soil health from which an increased bio-diversity of flora and fauna will follow. We will never ever use pesticides or glyphosates on this land.
Mid tier countryside stewardship gives us the opportunity to plant more hedges, turn our arable to meadows and plant trees.
Organic certification will give us and our customers the confidence to eat all we produce, secure in the knowledge that our food is safe and sustainable. We want to sell directly from the farm gate to local people.

Bird Life

The RSPCA have been instrumental in guiding our application for Mid Tier Stewardship. We have planted winter bird food covers, leaving long grass strips in the meadows rather than topping, and doing all we can to encourage insect bio diversity to act as a food source. We leave the hedges longer and cut them after the bird food source has been used, leaving most of them for three years between cuts. We are planting more fruit trees within the hedgerows and replanting over 3km of mixed hedging.
This year we will be reinstating four ponds and fencing these off, increasing the opportunity for fields and watercourses to drain slowly in periods of excess rain, and giving more places for birds and insects to inhabit.

River Life

The River Cherwell winds slowly round the farm and continues on down to Hampton Poyle and Oxford. Its home to a variety of wildlife and birds including King Fishers two sets of swans, inumerable fish and now Otters. The mill stream created to run the paper mill is a haven for animal and bird life. We protect the banks, and have stopped the application of all fertiliser, pesticides and Glyphosate. We hope that this small contribution will increase the bio-diversity of the river and contribute to the ecology of the river for us and our neighbours downstream

Soil

Soil is the lifeblood of our farm and the planet. Bio diversity starts with the soil. The healthier the microbial action and the mycorizal activity the greater the bug life and the worm count. This increases drainage, allows more carbon to be stored and negates the requirement for artificial fertiliser.
Where possible we strive to reduce compaction by limiting traffic over the ground.
